Overweight by a LOT.
Type 2 Diabetic taking insulin which is putting weight on faster than I can get it off. The weight is creeping up each year. Not a huge amount but several pounds.
My doctor suggested I look into the program that Dr Jason Fung is using to help overweight and diabetic individuals not only lose weight, but also reverse diabetes and get off all their meds. I would like that a lot.
It is a LCHF diet. Low carb, high fat diet. With fasting. A bunch of options for fasting. Any where from twelve hour and working up through 16 hour, 24 hour, 36 hour, and 42 hour. Then there is 5:2, alternate day, and 7 and 14 days fasts.
12 Hour Fast. The twelve hour fasting is relatively easy. Have breakfast starting at 7 a.m. and finish dinner by 7 p.m. Normal eating pattern for the first half of the last century.
16 Hour Fast. May or may not skip breakfast, but the first meal is at 11 a.m. and the last meal is finished by 7 p.m. leaving a 16 hour fast and an 8 hour eating window. Fairly easy to fit into your routine, simply skip breakfast or limit it to coffee, then lunch and dinner.
Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.
24 Hour Fast. Fast from Dinner to Dinner or Lunch to Lunch. This is not necessarily done every single day but two to three times a week, but can be done daily for better, faster, results. Works well for slow weight loss. Allows a meal each day so medications taken with food aren't a problem.
5:2 Diet. Michael Mosley's diet (in book The Fast Diet) where you take in only 500 calories two days a week, consecutive or non consecutive.
Alternate Day Fasting. You fast every other day. Again 500-600 calories on fasting days. Nice to get to target weight and then back off still maintaining target weight.
36 Hour Fast. You skip an entire day. Finish dinner on Day 1 at 7 p.m., fast through Day 2 with no food, then breakfast at 7 a.m. on Day 3. Usually fasting 3 times a week. Good for Type 2 diabetics. This will reverse the diabetes and allow the individual to get off all medications. The longer the individual has had diabetes, the longer it takes. No meals are taken on fasting days, only fasting fluids. This is more effective for weight loss than the 24 hour fasting, and is better for reducing blood sugar.
42 Hour Fast. Combining the 16 hour fast (skipping breakfast) with a day of water fasting (two to three a week) gives you a 42 hour fast. Fasting for an entire day at least three days each week plus skipping breakfast every day of the week. Useful for Type 2 diabetics, allowing more time forthebinsulin to drop. Beware when taking insulin.
Extended Fasting. After fourteen days of fasting, the average weight loss was 17.2 pounds. Blood sugar levels fell during fasting, as expected, to levels that significantly benefited the participants with diabetes— all three diabetic patients were completely off insulin by the end of the two weeks.
I am going to try the 42 Hour Fasting protocol.
